Everything You Need to Know About Bluffton, SC: One Town, Every Kind of Traveler

Written by Author 1 | Nov 2, 2026, 2:39:06 PM

Bluffton draws all kinds of travelers. Over the years at Old Town Bluffton Inn, most of our guests have fallen into four groups: leisure travelers, exploratory buyers, corporate travelers and corporate retreat groups. They come for different reasons, but Bluffton wins them over the same way.

I've spent my career in real estate, and here's what I've learned: nobody can sell Bluffton. Bluffton sells itself, because it's that good. So instead of a sales pitch, here's everything you need to know about Bluffton from where I sit, on May River Road in the middle of Old Town, and how each kind of traveler gets the most out of it.

Where Is Bluffton, SC?

Bluffton sits in Beaufort County, at the bullseye of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Hilton Head Island is next door, Savannah is close by, and Beaufort and Charleston are within easy reach. That location is the first thing that brings people here.

Then there's the food: a culinary scene and a culture around it that people plan entire trips around. Old Town is walkable in a way that feels nostalgic, intimate, and meaningful. Most of all, Bluffton has substance. It isn't pre-planned or manufactured. It has real history, real character, and more experiences than one visit can hold.

Here's how each kind of traveler experiences it, and how we help.

The Leisure Traveler: A Home Base for the Whole Lowcountry

Most of our guests come to Bluffton for the simplest reason: it's well placed. They spend their days exploring the small towns and cities around us. Bluffton to Hilton Head Island is an easy hop for a beach day, and Savannah makes a natural day trip too. Then they come back to Old Town in the evening.

That's usually when they fall for the place. Old Town is made for walking. People say hello as they pass you on the street, and pocket parks are tucked between the cottages and live oaks. The May River is never more than a few blocks away. With more than 30 restaurants, 13 art galleries and weather that lets you enjoy them most of the year, the Bluffton, SC lifestyle is easy to slip into, even for a weekend.

The shopping. Old Town is packed with places to shop. Home goods stores are filled with the kind of Lowcountry pieces people want to take home, and clothing boutiques line the streets between the galleries and cafés. Plenty of our guests plan an entire afternoon around it, and more than a few leave with an extra bag.

The river. The May River is Bluffton's adventure. Kayak it, paddleboard it, charter a boat, or watch the sunset over it from the bluff. It's the same tidal water that built this town's oyster trade.

The history. I love telling people Bluffton's story, because it runs much deeper than its size suggests. The Yemassee lived along these waters long before European settlement. On July 31, 1844, a crowd gathered under a massive live oak just outside town, later known as the Secession Oak, and launched the Bluffton Movement, the first organized call in South Carolina to leave the Union. Then, on June 4, 1863, Union gunboats carrying about 1,000 troops came up the May River and set the town on fire. Only two churches and about fifteen homes survived, and several still stand in Old Town today. Local author Jeff Fulgham tells the full story in The Bluffton Expedition: The Burning of Bluffton, South Carolina, During the Civil War, and it's a big reason so many history buffs exploring the Southeast end up staying with us.

Where the Inn fits. Leisure travelers care most about comfort and convenience, and both come down to location. We're in the historic district on May River Road, so dinner, the galleries, the boutiques, the river, and the town's history are all a stroll away. When you do want the car, much of the Lowcountry is close at hand. Our team will point you to the right table, the right tour and the right day trip, because we live here too.

The Exploratory Buyer: Coming to See If Bluffton Fits

Since the day we opened, we've hosted guests who are here to answer a bigger question: could we live here?

Some are planning for retirement and want to know whether the Lowcountry fits the next chapter. Others have already retired and are just ready for a change. Whatever their stage of life, they're weighing the same things that draw our leisure guests. The weather is mild year-round, life here happens outdoors, and the town is friendly without trying to be. And there's always another small town or outing within reach.

The remote worker. A growing share of the buyers we host aren't retiring at all. They work remotely, and they've realized their job doesn't tie them to any particular city. If you can work from anywhere, why not work from one of the best places in the Southeast? They come to test-drive the Bluffton lifestyle: a morning on the laptop, an afternoon on the May River, dinner a few steps away. Many of them go home with a plan to come back for good.

The surprise. Most exploratory buyers arrive expecting a short list. Bluffton is still a small town at heart, so it's natural to assume the real estate options are limited too. They aren't. Close to Old Town, you'll find gated golf and river communities, historic cottages, newer neighborhoods, lots for custom builds, and low-maintenance villas. Even a single neighborhood can offer a wide range. Then there are the taxes. In my experience, it's rare for a new resident to pay more here than where they came from, no matter where that was. Nearly every buyer I meet is surprised by how deep and varied this market really is.

Where the Inn fits. I've sold residential real estate for 25 years, and I never imagined our hotel would become a front door for people deciding whether to move here. But that's exactly what happened, and Danielle and I take the role seriously.

For many of these guests, we're the first meaningful conversation they have in Bluffton, and we're usually the ones saying goodbye when they leave. Everything in between matters. We host them well, we talk honestly about which neighborhoods fit the life they're describing, and we make sure they get to the right spot at the right time for the right meal.

When guests want a more structured search, our Heart of the Lowcountry package pairs a stay with community tours and introductions to trusted local professionals. For those who decide to build, our Design-Build Program gives them a home base for the length of the build.

The Corporate Traveler: In Tonight, Gone Tomorrow

We see most of our corporate guests during the week, when Old Town is at its quietest. As Bluffton and the Lowcountry keep growing, so does the number of business travelers walking through our door. They've included national lobbyists, financial planners and advisors, commercial and industrial builders, architects, and just about every profession in between.

Most of them check in late in the afternoon and leave early the next morning, so I only get to know the regulars. Even so, they need much of what our leisure guests need, just compressed into a shorter stay. They want a nice place to land so they can relax and focus on tomorrow's meeting, presentation, or closing.

What matters most. Our corporate guests have been clear about what makes the difference:

  • A truly comfortable bed. A good night's sleep is the whole point of a one-night stay, and we've got it handled. Our mattresses are custom-made, engineered specifically for us to deliver top-level comfort every time.
  • A quiet breakfast and good coffee. That's how they recharge and reset before the day starts.
  • Somewhere to meet. Corporate guests are always welcome to use our interior for meetings. During the day, even with a full house, the Inn is quiet while our team prepares for the evening. There's plenty of room to settle in at a bistro table for a one-on-one, or to meet in the lobby before heading out.
  • Places to entertain at night. Old Town's restaurants are steps from our front door, so taking a client to dinner is a walk, not a drive.

Where the Inn fits. A business trip doesn't have to feel like one. Our corporate guests stay in the historic district, within easy reach of both Hilton Head Island Airport and Savannah/Hilton Head International. They're within walking distance of a good dinner, in a place that feels more like a home than a hotel. Their feedback matters as much to us as anyone else's, and it shapes how we take care of the next guest who arrives at 5 p.m. with a big day ahead. If your team travels here often, ask about our corporate rates.

The Corporate Retreat: The Whole House, the Whole Town

This is the segment that surprises people most. Our doors stay locked to the public, so every guest already enjoys more privacy than most hotels offer. When a company books the entire Inn, that privacy becomes something rare: a private house in the middle of a busy little town, with everything right outside the door.

Why it works. A 14-room inn brings a group closer in a way a conference hotel can't. Teams that rarely get real time together outside the office get it here. I've often heard retreat groups say it feels more like a club. They're the only ones in the house, and nobody interrupts them the way groups usually get interrupted. They can meet quietly in our parlor while Old Town carries on outside the windows.

Easy for organizers. Retreat planners have plenty to juggle, so we try to make Bluffton the easy part:

  • Dining: Bluffton has a deep bench of high-quality options for breakfast, lunch, dinner or catering. We'll point you to the ones that fit your group.
  • Breakouts and downtime: With some 30 restaurants and plenty of shops and galleries within walking distance, attendees can scatter on a free afternoon and regroup easily.
  • Meeting and entertainment space: When a group needs more room than the parlor, we help find the right off-site venue, entertainment or experience. We're not a DMC, but for retreat groups we often fill that role, connecting organizers quickly with the people and places that fit.

As Bluffton and the surrounding area grow, we expect to host more retreats every year, and we look forward to every one. If you're planning one, we've already done the legwork, and our Group Stays & Buyouts page has the details.

More Than a Place to Stay

Leisure travelers, exploratory buyers, business travelers and retreat groups all come to Bluffton for different reasons. What they share is a need for someone on the ground who knows the town and cares how their visit turns out. Whatever brought a guest here, making sure they have what they need is where we excel.

That's what Danielle and I set out to build when we opened the Inn in January 2019. We wanted more than a destination. We wanted a trusted resource that helps people plan their days, connects them with the right people and places, and for some, helps them settle in for good.
