The Best Free Things to Do in Bluffton, SC
You do not need to spend much to enjoy Bluffton. Some of the best free things to do in Bluffton, SC are the ones locals do every day: browsing the galleries, walking the trails, and spending an afternoon by the river. Here are our favorite ways to experience the Lowcountry without spending a dime.
Browse the Art Galleries

Bluffton's art scene is free to enjoy, and it starts in the lobby of the Inn, which doubles as a private gallery of Lowcountry paintings by local artist Mickey Boisvert. From there, Calhoun Street is lined with galleries you can walk into at no charge. The Society of Bluffton Artists is the anchor, with rotating exhibits, free admission, and artists who often staff the gallery themselves and are happy to talk about their work. Red Piano Art Gallery and Ben Ham Images are worth a look too. It is an easy, unhurried way to spend a morning.
Walk the Nature Trails

Bluffton is laced with easy, scenic trails that are free to explore. The Victoria Bluff Heritage Preserve, off Highway 278, offers about four miles of flat, crisscrossing trails through pine and palmetto flatwoods, and it is a peaceful spot for a walk or some birdwatching. Note that it closes to hikers from October through December for hunting season, and it is worth bringing insect repellent. Closer to town, the Buckwalter Place Greenway is a short, partly accessible trail behind Publix that winds past wetlands and lagoons, an easy option if you would rather stay near Old Town.
Hunt for Shark Teeth at Wright Family Park
One of the more surprising free things to do in Bluffton is hunting for fossilized shark teeth. Head to Wright Family Park on Calhoun Street, where a sandy stretch along the May River is a favorite spot to comb for teeth at low tide. It is oddly addictive, and you will likely walk away with a small handful and a good story. The park is worth lingering at either way: the boardwalk and observation tower are made for slow strolling, herons and the occasional dolphin turn up on the water, and it is one of the best places in town to watch the sun set over the river.
Spend an Afternoon at Oscar Frazier Park

For a little more room to roam, Oscar Frazier Park near the center of town has open green space, shaded walking trails, and picnic areas spread out under the oaks. It is an easy, quiet spot to stretch your legs or pass a slow afternoon outdoors, and like the rest of this list, it is free.
Walk Old Town with Danielle's Stroll
Bluffton is made for walking, and the easiest way to see it is with Danielle's Stroll, the Inn's own hand-drawn map of Old Town that we hand to guests at the front desk. It lays out the shops, galleries, cafés, and restaurants scattered along Calhoun Street, the Promenade, and the quiet side streets, so you can wander at your own pace and take in the neighborhood the way locals do. The walk itself costs nothing. Browse the galleries, window-shop the boutiques, admire the antebellum cottages under the moss-draped oaks, and finish at the Church of the Cross, looking out over the May River. Take your time, because in Bluffton the wandering is the point.
