You wake up at Old Town Bluffton Inn, look outside, and see rain. Your May River plans may have changed, but your Bluffton day doesn’t have to.
If you're an adult looking for things to do on a rainy day in Bluffton, SC, we suggest leaning into the weather rather than fighting it. The best rainy day activities in Bluffton, SC let you slow down and settle in: learn a little Bluffton history, duck into local galleries, and stretch lunch into a glass of wine. Then go bowling, catch a movie, race indoor go-karts, or take on an escape room before coming back to the Inn for a break and making dinner the evening’s main event.
Before you head outside, ask us for one of our complimentary guest umbrellas.
Rainy Bluffton can be a pretty good place to spend a day.
Start slowly. Enjoy breakfast at the Inn and resist the urge to relocate the day’s itinerary to Savannah or Hilton Head simply because the forecast changed. One advantage of staying in Old Town Bluffton is that galleries, shops, restaurants, and historic sites surround you, with more than twenty restaurants within walking distance of the Inn alone.
If it’s a typical Lowcountry shower, borrow one of our umbrellas and explore on foot. If it’s really coming down, save the walking for later and use the car for the longer portions of the day. Either way, Bluffton still has plenty to do.
Begin at the Heyward House Museum and Cultural Center. The circa-1841 house also serves as Bluffton’s official Welcome Center and gives you context for the historic district right outside your hotel room. It works especially well on a rainy morning because you’re not simply looking at Old Town’s historic buildings; you get to understand why they’re here and how Bluffton developed around them.
Allow roughly an hour, then open the umbrella and head toward the art district.
Your next stop is the Society of Bluffton Artists, better known locally as SOBA. The nonprofit gallery showcases rotating work from local and regional artists across painting, photography, ceramics, jewelry, and other media, and because the collection changes regularly, it’s particularly good for repeat Bluffton visitors. It’s also free to browse, which makes it one of Bluffton’s best free activities whatever the weather.
Don’t make SOBA your only stop, though. Use the rain as an excuse to move slowly between Old Town’s other galleries, boutiques, and shops, ducking into places you might normally walk past.
The rain actually improves the pace.
By now, there’s no reason to keep watching the clock. Find somewhere comfortable in Old Town and make lunch part of the day’s experience rather than a break between activities. For an especially relaxed adult afternoon, Wine Time Bluffton lets you pair lunch or small plates with wine without leaving the neighborhood. Order something, try a glass you’ve never had before, and watch the rain outside.
Then decide what kind of afternoon you want. If the weather is improving, stay in Old Town. If it isn’t, this is where Bluffton’s wider collection of indoor activities comes into play.
You don’t have to drive far from Old Town to find an entirely different kind of afternoon.
For the classic option, head toward Buckwalter and Station 300. The entertainment center has 24 bowling lanes, an arcade, and a full bar and grill, so it’s easy to spend a couple of hours there without organizing several separate stops. Lane availability can be affected by leagues, so it’s worth checking ahead.
If bowling isn’t your thing, Cinemark Bluffton is also in the Buckwalter area. The theater offers reserved seating, luxury loungers, D-BOX options, and an on-site bar, making it an easy choice when the rain outside says you’re not going anywhere for the next two hours.
For something much more active, try Indy Karting & Amusement at Belfair Towne Village. Everything is indoors, with electric go-karts, duckpin bowling, axe throwing, arcade games, food and drinks under one roof. It’s a particularly good option for couples or friends who want an activity rather than another bar stool.
Or test how well you actually communicate with your travel companion at Lockstar Escape Room. Its private themed games are built around roughly hour-long puzzle experiences, and the venue currently operates by appointment, so book ahead rather than simply showing up.
All of these options keep you in Bluffton and within a short drive of the Inn, making them much better rainy-day pivots than sacrificing half the day to a trip elsewhere.
Or Make It a Bluffton Spirits Afternoon
If you’d rather keep the afternoon culinary, head to Burnt Church Distillery, where local spirits, cocktails, and tasting experiences can turn an otherwise washed-out afternoon into a distinctly Bluffton activity.
If alcohol is part of the plan, however, don’t assume you’ll be able to pull up an app and immediately find a ride home, since Uber and other rideshare availability can be scarce in Bluffton. We recommend two private local drivers who are available 24/7 and can be booked directly by phone:
Eric Biczko — 843-441-4323
Dimitrios Alexiou — 843-505-1329
Contact them in advance whenever possible, especially for evenings, airport transportation, or afternoons involving drinks.
Yes, coming back to the hotel is part of our itinerary. Leave the wet umbrella by the door and change clothes if you need to. Read downstairs, sit in the parlor, or head upstairs and listen to the rain for an hour. One benefit of staying at a small boutique inn is that your room doesn’t have to be just a place to sleep between activities.
On a rainy afternoon, let the Inn become part of the destination.
By evening, forget about the forecast and make dinner the final activity of the day. For an intimate night out, The Bluffton Room is only a short walk from the Inn and suits the slower, adults-focused pace of this itinerary. Order the cocktail and have the longer dinner.
If you’re not ready to call it a night, our guide to live music in Old Town Bluffton and our events page can point you to what’s happening nearby during your stay. If the rain is light, borrow an umbrella for the walk back, then come home to Old Town Bluffton Inn.
Tomorrow may be sunny again, and the May River, parks, and outdoor excursions will still be waiting. But today you learned some Bluffton history, discovered local art, had lunch over wine, and chose between bowling, a movie, indoor karting, an escape room, or locally made spirits. Then you came home for a while and finished with a proper dinner.
That’s not a ruined vacation day. That’s a rainy day in Bluffton.
Check availability at Old Town Bluffton Inn and make Old Town your home base, whatever the forecast.
